One of the best “actions have consequences” moments I witnessed was during a group project in college. One team member consistently missed deadlines and didn’t contribute to discussions, believing that others would pick up the slack. As the due date approached, the group decided to address the issue directly with him.
When it finally came time to present, the rest of the team delivered a strong presentation and received positive feedback, but during the Q&A session, the professor specifically asked our absent team member about his contributions. He stammered and struggled to answer, clearly unprepared and out of the loop.
The group ended up receiving a solid grade, but the professor also gave special attention to the teamwork aspect, which impacted the individual grades. As a result, he received a lower score, which made him realize the importance of collaboration and accountability. It was a hard lesson for him, but it really highlighted how not pulling your weight can affect not just your own success, but the success of the entire team.
