To the older members of Reddit: How did life differ before the advent of social media?
Life before social media was definitely different in many ways! For one, communication was more personal and direct. People typically kept in touch through phone calls, letters, or face-to-face conversations. It required more effort and intentionality to stay connected with friends and family, which often led to deeper relationships.
In terms of news and information, we relied on newspapers, television, and word-of-mouth. There wasn’t the constant stream of information that social media provides today, so it was easier to disconnect and have moments of quiet.
Social gatherings and events were also more focused on in-person interactions. People often met at local community centers, cafes, or around town rather than online. There was a sense of community that came from these shared in-person experiences.
On the flip side, it meant there were fewer platforms for expression and fewer avenues to connect with people who had similar interests beyond your local area. Overall, life was likely slower-paced with a greater emphasis on face-to-face interactions and a more filtered way of receiving information.
