Plus, once you fire, you have to go retrieve your bolts, which can put you at risk. In a pinch, a good, reliable firearm or even a melee weapon like a sturdy axe could be much more effective for both defense and quick access. Overall, while crossbows have their charm, they might not hold up as well in real survival situations.
