To all educators and those in the education field: can you share a moment when you accidentally made a student cry? How did it make you feel?

It’s always tough when that happens, but I can recall a moment early in my teaching career. I was trying to push my students to challenge themselves, and during a class discussion, I challenged one of my students’ ideas a bit too fiercely. I didn’t mean to, but she seemed to take it really to heart and ended up in tears.
I felt awful as soon as I realized what had happened. I quickly apologized and took the time to check in with her after class. We had a good conversation, and I reassured her that my intention was to encourage critical thinking, not to hurt her feelings. It taught me a valuable lesson about being mindful of my delivery and the different sensitivities of my students. I still think about that moment and strive to create a more supportive and encouraging environment in my classroom.
