As an employer, I’ve seen a wide range of job applications that made me shake my head. Here are a few memorable examples:
Typos Galore: One applicant misspelled our company name in the cover letter multiple times. If a candidate can’t pay attention to detail in their application, it raises a red flag about their potential work quality.
Unrelated Experience: I once received a resume from a graphic designer who had included multiple entries on their experience with dog grooming. While I appreciate diverse skills, it was hard to see how that would help in a design role.
Overly Casual Language: I had a candidate who addressed me in their cover email with “Hey dude!” It was clear they didn’t take the application process seriously, which is important in a professional setting.
Lack of Effort: Some applicants simply send generic resumes without tailoring them to the job description. One application even included a note saying, “I’d like to work anywhere.” If you’re not interested in the specific role, why should we be interested in you?
Inappropriate Content: I’ve encountered applications that included links to inappropriate social media posts or even personal blogs with offensive content. It’s essential to curate your online presence if you’re job hunting!
Lengthy and Irrelevant Cover Letters: I once received a cover letter that was several pages long, recounting the applicant’s entire life story rather than focusing on their qualifications for the position. Conciseness is key!
Ignoring Instructions: A candidate went against specific instructions for the application process, such as submitting a video when we clearly requested just a written application. It showed a lack of attention to detail.
Each of these situations taught me how important it is for candidates to present themselves professionally and tailor their applications to the job they’re applying for. It’s a competitive market, and every detail counts!
