What niche hobby do you invest a significant amount of your time in? What sparked your interest in it? Are you content with your decision?
I dedicate a significant amount of my time to collecting and restoring vintage typewriters. It all started when I stumbled upon an old Smith-Corona in my grandparents’ attic. I was fascinated by its mechanical design and the nostalgia it evoked. After researching, I learned about the history of typewriters and their place in the evolution of writing.
I started attending local flea markets and estate sales, looking for hidden gems. Over time, I taught myself how to repair and refurbish them, which has become a sort of therapeutic process for me. The satisfaction of bringing an old typewriter back to life and then putting it to use is incredibly fulfilling.
I’m very happy with my choice. Not only do I enjoy the thrill of the hunt for new additions to my collection, but I’ve also connected with a community of fellow enthusiasts. Sharing tips and stories, and even hosting workshops to teach others about typewriter maintenance, has made this hobby even more enriching. Plus, there’s something magic about typing on a vintage machine that just can’t be replicated digitally!
