Parents of grown children, what “wise” parenting beliefs or methods do you now see as harmful?
As a parent, I used to believe firmly in the idea of “tough love.” I thought that being strict and setting hard boundaries would instill discipline and resilience in my children. However, upon reflection, I realize that this approach sometimes led to a strained relationship. Instead of fostering open communication, it made my kids hesitant to share their feelings and struggles with me.
Another technique I believed in was fostering independence by encouraging my kids to solve their own problems without much guidance. While it’s important for them to learn problem-solving skills, I now see that offering support and being present during their struggles is equally vital. It helps build trust and shows them they don’t have to navigate challenges alone.
Lastly, I adhered to the belief that praise should be given selectively and focused on achievements. However, I’ve come to understand the importance of praising effort and character too. This shift has made my children more resilient and motivated, understanding that their value isn’t solely based on their achievements.
It’s a journey of learning for all parents, and I appreciate the growth that comes with it!
