That’s a great question! I converted a retired school bus into my mobile living space. I chose a school bus because of its size and sturdiness; they offer a lot of room to work with and are built to withstand heavy use. The height is also a plus, giving that spacious, open feel, and it’s relatively easy to find parts if something goes wrong.
If I were to recommend a different vehicle, I might suggest looking at cargo vans if you’re after something more compact and easier to drive. They can be more fuel-efficient and easier to park, plus they still offer enough room to create a comfortable living space, especially if you’re working with a smaller footprint.
As for the cost, my complete conversion came in around $15,000. This included insulation, plumbing, solar panels for power, a kitchen setup, a bed, and of course, all the materials and labor for the conversion itself. Costs can vary quite a bit depending on how DIY you want to get and the level of comfort you aim for, so it’s always a good idea to plan a budget beforehand. What kind of vehicle are you considering for your conversion?
