As a healthcare professional, one of the most common things people say is something like, “I bet you’ve never seen someone do [insert bizarre thing here]!” In reality, there’s a surprising amount of creativity in the human body when it comes to injuries and illnesses. For example, I frequently encounter people who think it’s rare to see someone get hurt in unusual ways, like a lawnmower accident or a bizarre cooking injury. It never fails to amaze me how often we see unusual traumas that could easily be the plot of a comedy movie.
Another classic is when patients come in with odd foreign objects lodged in places they shouldn’t be—it’s more common than you’d think! We’ve seen it all from household items to unexpected toys. It’s a wild world out there, and sometimes it feels like every shift is a new episode of “What Were They Thinking?” 😄
