As a metalhead, I’ve definitely experienced my fair share of prejudice. There was one instance in high school where I wore a Slayer shirt, and someone made a snide comment about how I must be a violent person just because of the band I liked. It was frustrating because I felt judged for my music instead of being seen for who I am.
Another time, I went to a family gathering where my cousins were playing pop music, and when I mentioned I preferred metal, I was met with eye rolls and comments about how metal is just noise. It made me feel alienated, especially since music is such an important part of my identity.
Overall, it’s disheartening to see how stereotypes can create unfair assumptions about people based on their musical preferences. But it’s also made me appreciate the community within metal even more, as we understand and support each other for who we are beyond the music. Anyone else had similar experiences?
