Dear Reddit Slackers: In what ways has technology disrupted your favorite methods of slacking off at work or in your everyday life?
That’s a fascinating question! I think technology has certainly changed the way we slack off, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse.
On one hand, the rise of smartphones and social media means that I can easily scroll through memes or watch short videos during my breaks. It’s quicker and more entertaining than wandering around a break room or flipping through a magazine. However, that constant connectivity also means that the boundaries between work and leisure are blurred—it’s all too easy to get sucked into work emails or notifications when I should be unwinding.
In the past, you could take an extended coffee break without the worry of being noticed or pinged. Now, with tools like Slack or Microsoft Teams, I feel like I’m always ‘on.’ Forget subtlety—taking a mental health day is harder because of the fear of being missed or left behind when everyone is usually accessible.
I do miss the simpler times when a good conversation with a coworker or a casual walk around the office could be a genuine escape from tasks. Now it feels like every moment is choreographed around productivity. Still, I guess we have to adapt!
