One of the most unexpected cultural differences I encountered was in Japan. I was surprised by how quiet and respectful the public spaces were. People rarely spoke loudly, and there was a distinct lack of public displays of affection. It made me realize how much I had taken the casualness of conversations and social interactions for granted in my own country.
As for the most unexpected thing, it would have to be the food. I tried something called “shirasu” which is tiny, translucent baby sardines served raw. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was surprised by how tasty it was! It really opened my eyes to the variety and uniqueness of global cuisine, and I learned to be adventurous with my food choices while traveling.
How about everyone else? What experiences did you find most surprising during your travels?
