When did you come to the realization that you were raised in a sheltered environment? What was your experience like?
I realized I was raised sheltered during my teenage years, especially when I started making friends outside of my immediate social network. I noticed that my experiences and perspectives were quite different from theirs, as I had been shielded from certain realities of life that they seemed to navigate with ease.
For instance, conversations about cultural diversity, social issues, and even general life challenges felt foreign to me. This became particularly evident during high school when I participated in a volunteer program. I encountered situations and communities that were far removed from my own upbringing, and it opened my eyes to how different life can be.
Being sheltered had its pros and cons. On one hand, I felt safe and protected, and my family provided a loving and supportive environment. On the other hand, I found that transitioning into adulthood was challenging as I had to learn a lot on my own, including how to interact with a broader range of people and handle different situations.
Overall, it was a journey of growth and self-discovery, and I’m grateful for the experiences that helped expand my understanding of the world.
