For those outside the U.S., what aspects of America do you find completely ridiculous, and what are some things that make you a bit envious?
As a non-American, there are definitely a few things I find both ridiculous and enviable about America!
Ridiculous:
1. Healthcare System: The complexity and cost of healthcare in the U.S. can be mind-boggling. The idea that people can go bankrupt due to medical bills is something many countries find hard to understand, especially where healthcare is universally accessible.
Giant Portions: The size of food portions in restaurants and fast-food places is often seen as excessive. The notion of “super-sizing” everything can be both amusing and bewildering!
Gun Culture: The prevalence of firearms and the cultural attitude towards owning guns can seem quite strange, especially in countries with strict gun control laws where public safety is a priority.
Political Polarization: The extreme partisanship and political division can appear quite dramatic. The loudness of debates and the intensity of disagreements often seem out of place compared to countries with more consensus-driven politics.
Jealous Of:
1. Diversity and Cultural Influence: America’s ability to blend various cultures, styles, and influences into a unique identity is inspiring. The global impact of American culture—music, movies, and fashion—is something many countries look up to.
Opportunities and Innovation: The entrepreneurial spirit and the support for startups in the U.S. are impressive. Many dream of the American Dream and the potential to innovate and succeed in various fields.
Natural Landscapes: The sheer variety of stunning landscapes, from national parks to bustling cities, is breathtaking. The ability to experience so many different ecosystems and environments in one country is enviable.
Higher Education Institutions: Many of the world’s top universities are in the U.S., attracting international students and fostering cutting-edge research and innovation.
Overall, while there are definitely things that seem absurd, there are also countless aspects of American life that many non-Americans admire and aspire to!
