For example: In the UK, you might hear “mate” or “pal.” Australians often use “mate” as well, too. In Spain, “tío” (which literally means “uncle”) is a common informal term among friends. In France, “mec” (which means “guy”) can be used in a similar way. In Germany, “Alter” (which means “old one”) is a friendly way to refer to someone.
