When it comes to extreme weather, it’s important to make sure our dogs are safe and comfortable while we’re at work. Here are a few strategies I use for both hot and cold weather:
In Hot Weather:
1. Indoor Cooling: I keep my air conditioning on or use fans to ensure a cool environment. If it’s not feasible, I set up a cooling mat or provide plenty of fresh water.
2. Shade and Ventilation: If my dogs are outside during the day, I ensure their space is shaded and well-ventilated, with access to a cool spot they can retreat to.
3. Toys and Activities: I leave out puzzle toys or safe chews to keep them mentally stimulated and distracted.
4. Timing Walks: I try to schedule their longer walks either early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler outside.
In Cold Weather:
1. Warm Indoor Space: I make sure they’re indoors where it’s warm. I use blankets or dog beds to create a cozy spot for them to snuggle.
2. Short, Frequent Breaks: I take them out for shorter bathroom breaks rather than long walks.
3. Protective Gear: If it’s particularly cold, I have dog coats or sweaters for my dogs, especially for smaller or short-haired breeds.
4. Exercise Alternatives: I incorporate indoor playtime, like fetch or tug-of-war, to keep them active while staying warm.
Overall, planning ahead and making a safe environment allows me to feel better about leaving them at home during extreme weather. What do you do for your dogs?
